Heather Graham will surprise her audience in her new movie ‘Gray Matters’ when she turns out to be a lesbian.  Gray Matters is an offbeat comedy written and directed by Sue Kramer. 

Sam (Tom Cavanagh) and his sister Gray (Heather Graham) are brother and sister who share the same passions: music and styles of the 40’s.  They both love the movie musicals from that time and are talented ballroom dancers.  When Charlie (Bridget Moynahan), a very attractive woman, appears in their lives Sam falls deeply in love with her.  Charlie, a zoologist, is crazy about retro styles and a sucker for old movies.  The picture fits perfectly.  But then Gray shocks herself and her surroundings by falling head over heals for Charlie.  Gray is surprised because she has never felt any attraction to another woman before.  It all evolves into a romantic love triangle.

This indie film is filled with well-known actors like Sissy Spacek who plays Gray’s psychotherapist, Alan Cumming as a taxi-driver who becomes a real confidant to Gray, and Molly Shannon as Gray’s neurotic colleague.  This frothy comedy was shot in New York City, a place to discover your sexually identity and embrace your inner beauty.

Sue Kramer tells us that it took six years to get the film made.  It was shot in 21 days.  She wrote the parts for Sissy Spacek and Alan Cummings specifically and then started to find the other pieces of the puzzle.  Sue got her inspiration for this movie from her sister, who is gay.  She once told Sue she had a crush on one of her friends and it all felt very awkward at that time.  Later on, Sue realized it wasn’t so weird that her sister liked her friends too.  If you are siblings and close friends you’re often attracted to the same kind of persons.  That feeling was used to write this movie: siblings, best friends and the one woman they both fall in love with.

‘Gray Matters’ will come out on Valentine’s Day in your local theaters.
